Meet Buddy (Bud for short) who is 75 pounds of love and energy. For a portion of his Bud was an outdoor dog and then lived briefly in a home that was not a great match for his needs. Despite those disappointments early in his life, he’s a wonderfully happy and resilient dog. For the right adopter, Bud is likely to be a one of those once-in-a-lifetime companions.
Bud’s a people pleaser! On top of that he’s very food and toy motivated, which makes him highly trainable. He will come to his new home potty trained, crate trained and does not climb up on furniture. He also has outstanding recall, which makes him easy to manage. He knows and respects sit and stay well – even when presented with his food bowl or an open door. Because he’s a people lover, Bud’s not interested in escaping for adventures without this people; he respects the 4-foot fence that marks the border of his current foster’s home.
At approx. 4 years old, Bud does need work on some behaviors that he did not learn (or unlearn) as a younger dog. Currently his leash manners leave a little to be desired. But he’s very manageable for anybody comfortable using a prong collar and verbal commands to minimize leash pulling. He’s also a bit physical and mouthy when he’s excited or wants attention – his love bumps and nibbles can be off-putting for the faint of heart (particularly if you don’t know him). His foster is working with him on different ways to manage his excitement. It’s been reported that he resource guards toys, but that behavior has not been observed in his current foster home. He is the only dog in his foster home. Out and about – even on leash – Bud has demonstrated only curiosity about other dogs on lease or through a fence.
You and your family would be an ideal match for Bud if you are very active and have room for him to run and play. Bud’s accustomed to walking at least 4 miles per day – with addition time for free-running in the backyard. He also like to play – a lot! So be ready to toss a ball or play tug-of-war a couple times a day. He will entertain himself, but his strong preference is to interact with his people. Given his size and physicality, we recommend Bud for adult-only and/or young adult households. Bud takes daily joint health supplements to help manage some hip dysplasia in his left hind leg. He also eats non-prescription foods better suited for sensitive skin that helps minimize dry/itchy skin he experiences from time to time.
